Presented by The Impossible Music Sessions in association with Habana/Harlem(R), the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center, and Freemuse: The World Forum on Music and Censorship, with assistance from Emcetrece Productions.
In Cuba, hip-hop artists who uphold “revolutionary” doctrine are supported by the government. Those who don’t are barred from state-controlled media and subject to harassment by the authorities. They work underground and online, performing unofficial shows.
Escuadrón Patriota is a bold new voice in the underground. Escuadrón's 2009 YouTube release, "Decadencia," makes an uncompromising call for freedom (here translated):
"They took it all from us, but not our ability to resist, and words are strength
Brothers, on your feet--there is nothing more beautiful than a nation when it awakens
We don't want blood--let no one perish, but let us raise our heads
Like Víctor Jara telling his people, 'Freedom is near'"
Miki Flow is an internationally recognized hip hop artist with roots in Alamar, the birthplace of hip hop in Cuba. He now lives in Washington, D.C. Miki Flow's early career was featured in the 2006 documentary film "East of Havana," produced by Charlize Theron.
The Casualty Process are an electronic rock band from Tehran, featuring Natch on guitar, vocals, and customized Midi controller and Shayan on guitar, bass, and vocals.
Gif is an up-and-coming purveyor of "intellectual street culture" from East Harlem.
